The Media Council of Kenya (MCK), a statutory and self-regulatory body established under the Media Council Act, 2013, is mandated to regulate and promote the development of journalism while safeguarding media freedom in Kenya. Through standard-setting, mediation on ethical breaches and support for professional growth, the Council works to uphold high standards in journalism.

As part of its commitment to celebrating and protecting the profession, MCK observes international days dedicated to press freedom. A key highlight of World Press Freedom Day (WPFD), commemorated globally on 3rd May, is the Council’s flagship event the Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA).

About AJEA 2025
The Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) recognizes outstanding journalistic work and rewards excellence in creativity, innovation, ethics and impactful storytelling. AJEA is the pinnacle of WPFD celebrations in Kenya.

Objectives of the Awards:

  • Celebrate journalists who demonstrate high standards of ethics and professionalism.
  • Identify capacity gaps within the industry to inform training and support efforts.
  • Inspire and motivate young journalists to excel and grow in their careers.
  • Encourage the media to uphold democratic values, integrity, and accountability.
  • Promote coverage of the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Why the Awards Matter:
AJEA reflects MCK’s broader mandate to maintain ethical journalism practices while recognizing those who serve as watchdogs, challenge power and drive innovation in the media. The awards also help the Council identify emerging trends, training needs and areas for development within the profession.
