The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called upon journalism students to observe the principles of journalism as they seek to grow in the profession.
MCK Director for Media Training and Development Victor Bwire has said that observing principles of journalism is vital in maintaining integrity, credibility, and effectiveness of the profession.
“The principles of journalism demand that journalists report the truth, seek credible sources and disseminate information on time for public consumption”, said Mr Bwire at a Media Information Literacy (MIL) Forum at the Multimedia University.
Mr Bwire reiterated the necessity to gain a deeper understanding of conflict and gender-sensitive reporting to inform ethical decision-making while at the same time minimise harm through careful consideration of potential impacts.
“Conflict-sensitive reporting rests in the ability to cultivate trust among sources and promote social cohesion”, he added.
The Star Journalist Lindwe Danflow appealed to the students to identify areas of expertise in the media field and secure a mentor’s guidance. in navigating its vast terrain.
“I strongly encourage you to identify areas of specialisation and seek guidance from a mentor to facilitate your professional growth in the industry”, advised Ms Danflow.
The MIL aimed to equip journalism students at the Multimedia University with skills to critically analyse and evaluate media content in today’s digital age.
