The World Radio Day is celebrated every 13th of February. It was proclaimed by UNESCO Member States in 2011 and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as an International Day.
Radio is considered to be a powerful medium for celebrating diversity and constitutes a platform for democratic discourse. It remains to be the most widely consumed medium. It has a unique ability of reaching out the widest audience by offering a wide variety of programs and content suitable to its audience.
This year, the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has partnered with Aga Khan University and the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO, to commemorate the 2025 World Radio Day under the theme "Radio and Climate Change."
This year's theme is particularly relevant as global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and secure climate financing intensify. The media plays a vital role in reporting on both the progress made and the challenges journalists encounter when covering climate change.
The event focused on raising awareness of the importance of climate change reporting, building the capacity of journalists in this field, and fostering collaborations to address the challenges they face. These challenges include ensuring the safety of journalists, improving access to information and strengthening fact-checking practices.
The commemoration brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, development partners, media representatives, academics and journalists. It provided a platform for discussion on the day's theme and explore solutions to the obstacles journalists face when covering climate change.
