The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is urging stakeholders across the country to collaborate in promoting and safeguarding press freedom.
According to MCK Meru Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja, both Sate and non-state actors are vital in creating an environment conducive to press freedom.
“Press freedom is not only a constitutional right but also the foundation of democracy”, Karanja emphasised at a Strategic Stakeholder Engagement Forum in Meru County, which brought together government representatives, civil society and other key sectors. The forum aimed to strengthen partnerships for promoting accountability, professionalism and transparency in policing.
He called upon the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to expedite the investigation and resolution of cases involving the harassment or intimidation of journalists while performing their duties.
In his keynote address, IPOA Chairperson Isaack Hassan reiterated the Authority’s unwavering commitment to enhancing transparency and accountability within the police service.
“Our objective is to build public trust in the police service by ensuring justice, fairness, and professionalism in their operations”, said Mr Hassan.
