The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called for enhanced adherence to the rule of law on matters concerning journalists' safety.
MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo says effective application of legislation on press freedom remains a critical cog in efforts towards enhancing journalists’ safety as well as improving relationship between the media and governance institutions.
"No matter how well-crafted the legal framework for media may be, its effectiveness hinges on universal respect and adherence. Mutual respect and understanding between journalists and government officials is essential for fostering a healthy media environment”, said Mr Omwoyo when he spoke at the second National Media Sector Development Conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
While alluding to recent press freedom violations meted on journalists covering a protest in Kenya by security agencies, Mr Omwoyo rallied the Tanzanian media stakeholders to take a proactive stand in advocating for journalists' safety in the line of duty.
"When accredited journalists are unjustly arrested, Media Councils must intervene swiftly by advocating for release to ensure that press freedom is upheld”, he emphasised.
He called for mutual relationship between the Tanzanian press and the government, encouraging them to take advantage of the rapport to enhance positive policy advocacy.
He mentioned that “the government and media have a symbiotic relationship meant for the public good and therefore both parties have to play their part in strengthening it”.
