The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has emphasised the importance of mentorship programmes among journalism and communication students to foster professionalism.

Speaking during an engagement in Maseno University City Campus, MCK Kisumu Regional Coordinator Evans Teddy said the Council is enhancing professionalism in the industry by administering practical experiences to learners to ensure they are ready for the job market.

He stressed the importance of students maintaining a steadfast commitment in their quest for knowledge and urged them to treat their profession with utmost seriousness.

“Developing a portfolio of work and relevant work experience while studying is essential to work in the journalism profession. Start your own blog to sharpen your writing style and interview techniques”, said Mr Teddy.

He advised them to cultivate patience and take proactive measures and engage in university activities to build a firm foundation for their future careers.

“Journalism and communications students must exercise patience, undertake timely submission of assignments and be proactive in university activities to build a long-lasting career foundation,” he said.

The participants were enlightened on the importance of accreditation and the process of obtaining a press card for students and media trainers.
