Like-minded institutions have been encouraged to support efforts towards the realisation of the government’s commitment to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.
Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Meru Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja has reiterated the Council’s commitment to the presidential directive on the tree restoration programme to combat climate change.
“To make the government’s directive come to fruition, we are working with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) to implement tree restoration programmes to combat climate change and enhance ecosystem health”, said Mr Karanja at a meeting with Meru Deputy County Conservatory Manager Ms Margaret Mugure.
He added that the media is a vital partner in informing the public and mobilising support towards environmental issues.
Ms Mugure stated that achieving the plan to have 30 per cent forest cover requires a holistic approach from all quarters of the society.
“If churches, schools and organisations come on board to join this noble initiative, we can manage to not only achieve the set target but also help conserve the environment”, she said.
In 2022, the MCK and KFS teamed up to adopt a five-acre land in Ndoinet Forest, Bomet County, where over 10,000 trees have so far been planted.
