Journalists have been exhorted to utilise their platforms to advocate for change and development in the counties.
Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Meru Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja says journalists are best placed to be drivers of progress and agents of change in society given their position.
“Journalists play a crucial role as agents of change in the society. They serve as watchdogs, informers and advocates contributing to the shaping of public opinion and fostering a transparent and accountable society”, said Mr Karanja while speaking to Tharaka Nithi Association of Journalists.
He emphasised the need to provide accurate, timely and relevant information to the public, noting that this would empower them to make informed decisions while at the same time enable them to actively participate in the daily operations of the nation.
He further noted the role played by journalists in peacebuilding and stressed the need to adhere to ethical standards to uphold professionalism.
“The Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya outlines the basic principles that journalists must follow to maintain public trust and carry out their role in bringing about positive change in society”, said Mr Karanja.
