The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has implored journalists to familiarise themselves with the happenings in their surroundings for better reporting of their stories.
MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Ms Maureen Mudi has challenged journalists to source for opportunities that will hone their skills in reporting on different topics.
“Understanding your area and ensuring you produce local content that resonates with your audiences is one way of tapping into media sustainability,” said Ms Mudi during a journalists’ training on local content production and monetisation of digital content in Taita Taveta County.
Ms Mudi noted that the training was meant to equip journalists to be all-rounded especially those working in local media houses.
She urged the journalists to exercise discipline and commitment while seeking to grow their online presence to yield returns.
MCK Kisumu Regional Coordinator Mr Evans Teddy underpinned the importance of journalists being financially literate and engaging in savings to live better lives.
“Most journalists live beyond their means and compare themselves with their sources. Being financially prudent is critical to avoid overspending on unnecessary issues,” remarked Mr Teddy.
He advised the journalists to develop solid a database of journalists across the region to collaborate on cross-border issues and stories.
Ms Jane Kiarie, a journalist with Tumani Radio, said the training opportunity was unique, adding that it has brought out vital elements of journalistic work she had not ventured into before.
“Am being trained by MCK for the first time and I really appreciate this encounter. It is important for my growth both as an individual and a journalist. I will utilise the skills learnt to improve myself,” she said.
