The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has reaffirmed the importance of ethical journalism and the strategic use of digital platforms in news reporting.
MCK Meru regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja told a sensitisation forum hosted by GTN Media Services in Nyeri County that professionalism remains key within the media industry.
"The media's role in informing the public is paramount. However, ethical journalism is the bedrock of credibility and trust. Journalists must prioritise accuracy, fairness, and accountability in all their reporting”, Mr Karanja stated.
Mr Karanja stressed the dangers of misinformation and sensationalism, urging journalists to rigorously verify information before publication and to consistently uphold balanced reporting practices.
"Misinformation erodes public trust in the media. Our duty as journalists is to fact-check meticulously and to deliver accurate, objective news”, he noted.
He also highlighted the transformative potential of digital journalism while acknowledging its inherent challenges.
"Digital platforms have revolutionised news dissemination, but they also present new challenges. Journalists must be vigilant and exercise responsibility in their use of these powerful tools”, Mr Karanja added.
Reaffirming the MCK's commitment to continuous training and professional development, Mr Karanja assured attendees of ongoing capacity-building initiatives designed to support ethical and responsible journalism.
"We are dedicated to equipping journalists with the skills necessary to navigate the evolving media landscape effectively," he concluded.
