The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has urged upcoming journalists to adopt digital literacy to enable content monetisation and to enhance personal portfolios.
MCK Meru Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja advised students to nurture their skills to leverage the opportunities that come with the evolving digital media space.
“In a digital-first world, mastering digital literacy is essential. By mastering skills like Search Engine Optimisation and cybersecurity, you can enhance your content and stay ahead in an ever-changing industry”, said Karanja during a career talk at Vertex College in Meru County.
“Honing skills in blogging, podcasting and vlogging, are some of the vital roles of digital literacy in the contemporary media industry”, he said.
He noted that platforms such as blogs, podcasts and vlogs empower individuals to share their narratives and expertise with their audiences worldwide.
“Content creation is a powerful tool for communication, brand building and advocacy. Whether you choose to write, speak or create videos, there’s a platform that fits your unique voice”, he stated.
Karanja acknowledged the rise of podcasts, attributing it to its exceptional accessibility while at the same time calling on the students to embrace the medium for storytelling and interviews.
“Whether you’re blogging, podcasting or vlogging, the key is to be authentic and consistent. Your audience connects with your personality and your unique perspective, so let your true self shine through your content”, he remarked.
