The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called upon journalists to prioritise disseminating stories and programs to educate the community about environmental conservation.
Speaking during a tree planting exercise at Kobuchoi Forest in Nandi County, the Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Prof Edward Kisiang’ani stressed the need for responsibility in environmental conservation noting that engaging in prompt measures will lead to protecting and preserving the environment.
“Kenya has witnessed the devastating effects of floods and droughts. In response to this pressing issue, we are taking proactive steps to mitigate and heal the effects of climate change by embarking on a tree-planting initiative. Trees are a vital part of our strategy to restore balance to our environment and address the challenges posed by climate change”, he stressed.
He spelled out the ministry’s commitment to planting 5 million seedlings, alluding to its significance in the battle against climate change.
Nandi Governor Stephen Sang called on Nandi residents to care for the planted trees, to create a sustainable and flourishing environment for current and future generations.
‘’It is our responsibility to look after the trees planted in our county. These trees are not just plants but the lifeline of our environment. Nurturing them will ensure a sustainable and flourishing environment for ourselves and generations to come,” he remarked.
MCK Nakuru Regional Coordinator Joseph Mecha appealed to journalists to amplify stories and programs that inform the community about environmental conservation. He said that such stories will shed light on various practices aimed at conserving the environment.
‘’Sharing compelling stories and informative programs can raise awareness on the impact of deforestation, climate change, and pollution on our planet. They can also shed light on successful conservation efforts, innovative technologies, and sustainable practices that are making a difference in our communities’’, he said.
The tree planting initiative brought together stakeholders from including Kenya Forestry Service, Koitalel Samoei University, Konza Technopolis Development Authority, Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board, and the Office of The Data Protection Commissioner, among others.
