The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has underscored the importance of conducting media security analysis and dialogues to foster collaboration between media practitioners and security agencies.

MCK Manager, Press Freedom, Safety and Advocacy Dinnah Ondari urged journalists to prioritise personal safety and cultivate a strong working rapport with security agencies.

“Journalists and media houses must undertake regular risk assessments and propose mitigation practices”, said Ms Ondari at a media security dialogue forum in Bungoma County.

She further said the government’s duty to prioritise the security and safety of journalists is essential for upholding press freedom, fostering accountability and safeguarding the nation’s democracy.

Bungoma County Commissioner Thomas Sankei commended the Council for its progressive initiatives aimed at ensuring the safety of journalists.

He also praised the journalists in Bungoma for their professionalism and their collaboration with his team in educating, sensitising and informing the public.

“The media’s role in addressing public interest issues, serving as a watchdog and fostering democratic discourse is crucial and cannot be emphasised enough”, stressed Commissioner Sankei.

He urged the media to remain professional for peaceful co-existence of communities in Kenya.

The platform provided media and security experts to share experiences and as well make recommendations to improve the very important roles of the media & security for the good of the public.
