The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has highlighted the critical role of media in shaping public perception regarding violent extremism, emphasising its potential to either unite or divide society.

During a sensitisation forum on preventing and countering violent extremism reporting, MCK’s Manager of Press Freedom and Advocacy Leo Mutisya stressed that media significantly influences national security discourse. He cautioned journalists against sensationalism and propaganda, noting that irresponsible reporting can inadvertently support terrorist objectives.

“Adhering to ethical standards ensures our work positively contributes to countering violent extremism,” stated Mutisya.

He emphasised the importance of sensitivity and informed reporting, urging journalists to rigorously fact-check information to prevent misinformation and disinformation.

“Inaccurate reports misinform the public, escalate tensions, fuel radical narratives and undermine national security. Journalists must verify sources, avoid speculation and rely on credible evidence to maintain public trust and inform society,” he added.

Edna Nyatichi, Head of Media and Communications at Kenya’s National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), echoed these sentiments, highlighting the power of responsible reporting in countering misinformation and preventing radicalisation. She underscored the necessity of accuracy, balance, and fact-checking to provide credible and objective information.

“Journalists should frame stories to inform and educate, rather than fuel fear and misinformation,” Nyatichi said, emphasising the media’s responsibility to foster peace, stability, and understanding.

Media Consultant Owino Opondo advised journalists to approach violent extremism with sensitivity, understanding and a deep understanding of its societal impact.

“Our approach matters, and the impact of our reporting extends beyond headlines. Let’s use our platforms responsibly,” she urged.

The forum served as a call to action for media professionals to recognise heir vital role in countering violent extremism through informed, accurate and responsible reporting.
