The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called for intensified efforts to elevate the quality of reporting on the blue economy and tourism.
MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Maureen Mudi says strategic partnerships and journalist training programmes play a key role in this process.
"In the early days, we had reporters extensively covering the blue economy and tourism. Unfortunately, many experienced journalists are leaving the industry, creating a knowledge gap. To address this, MCK is focused on equipping the next generation of journalists with the necessary skills", she said when she visited Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) Mombasa.
She commended BMA's support during past Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) and highlighted recent improvements to the awards.
"This year, we've introduced the Tourism Reporting Award among three new thematic categories. Our specialised training on blue economy and tourism reporting will empower journalists to tell impactful stories and compete for this prestigious award", she added.
BMA CEO Dr. Eric Katana affirmed the academy's commitment to supporting these initiatives.
"You can count on us. We are ready to provide the space and resources needed to uphold ethical standards and improve reporting in these sectors", he said.
Dr. Katana underscored the importance of collaboration between institutions like MCK and BMA in creating globally resonant stories.
"By working together, we can help Mombasa and the Coastal Region unlock the full potential of the blue economy and tourism", he added.
As MCK and BMA strengthen their partnership, the spotlight remains on enhancing journalistic excellence to amplify the region's economic opportunities and global impact.
