The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has emphasised the importance of embracing innovation for sustainability.

MCK Assistant Director, Training and Curriculum Development Christine Nguku highlighted the transformative nature of Artificial Intelligence (AI) noting its impact on content creation, distribution and consumption.

"AI has made significant strides in transforming the collection of information and data processing, enabling efficiency in news gathering, tailored to meet the ever-evolving demand for news", she said at the 4th International Technical University of Kenya (TUK) Conference.

She revealed that the adoption of AI tools has aided majorly in streamlining news production by automating tasks, therefore, allowing journalists to focus on more analytical aspects of reporting.

Ms Nguku cautioned on the importance of maintaining integrity and upholding ethics in the use of these technologies.

"Although AI can enhance media operations, it is essential that we continue to apply human input, and discernment while adhering to journalistic ethics", she stated.

She mentioned the Council’s commitment to advocating for the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) to revolutionize the media space in Kenya.

Exploring Visual Cultures (EVC) Founder and Secretary Dr Ernst Wagner illustrated how AI continues to evolve. He encouraged media professionals by reiterating the need to strike a balance between embracing technological advancements and compliance with ethical standards.

"The rise of AI presents a unique opportunity for Kenya's media landscape to adapt and innovate, but human oversight and ethical considerations must remain at the forefront of these changes", he said.
