The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has committed to safeguarding media freedom to strengthen professionalism in the media industry through partnerships.
MCK Nakuru Regional Coordinator Mr Joseph Mecha confirmed the Council’s assurance, saying that strategic partnerships are key in attaining the organisation’s mandate.
“The Council is ready and willing to partner with people who are keen on enhancing journalists’ work in the country. Such partnerships are important to help us build the capacity of journalists on various issues to ensure accurate and professional reporting”, said Mr Mecha during a meeting with the Baringo County Deputy Governor Mr Felix Kipngo’k.
Mr Kipngók noted the importance of media freedom in democracy, saying that according journalists’ independence will enable them to hold leaders accountable.
“A free and independent media connects citizens to crucial information, enabling accountability of government officials and providing a platform for diverse views and opinions that promote democracy,” said Mr Kipngók.
He highlighted the relevance of subjecting journalists to continuous training in conflict-sensitive reporting, devolution and parliamentary reporting. He alluded that this would aid in improving their skills in news production.
“There is a need to train journalists working in conflict-affected areas in conflict-sensitive reporting and also sensitize them on devolution and parliamentary reporting”, he stated
He emphasised the need to train content creators on the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya and other thematic areas of interest in journalism, considering their significant following on social media platforms.
He lauded the Council for its work on safeguarding media freedom and enhancing professionalism in the country and expressed the County’s willingness to partner with the Council.
