The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has urged media support groups in Mombasa region to collaborate to enhance media sustainability.

Speaking during a meeting with Mombasa Press Club officials, MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Ms Maureen Mudi, said collaborations are critical in creating platforms for knowledge sharing and collective problem-solving.

Ms Mudi informed the officials that the Council intends to conduct frequent capacity-building workshops, trainings and offer mentorship opportunities to improve the operational and editorial skills of media support groups.

“We will train on content creation, journalistic ethics, digital media literacy and organisational management, while also providing access to essential resources and tools that can facilitate effective operations and editorial processes for media support groups”, she stressed.

She added, the Council will offer guidance on regulatory requirements that govern media operations, as well as provide insights on procedures to ensure compliance with media laws.

“Our focus is to provide guidance on media operations, compliance with media laws and diversification of income streams for sustainability”, she said.

Mombasa Press Club Representative Ms Juney Karisa said they are undertaking a needs assessment to understand the specific operational and editorial prerequisites of media support groups in the area.

“We want to actively engage with local communities to address information needs, foster dialogue, participation and include them in content creation”, she noted.
