The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has advised communication officers in county governments to remain proactive in ensuring access to information.

MCK Meru Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja stated that access to information plays a pivotal role in the growth and development of counties.

“Informed citizens are the backbone of a thriving democracy. Access to information empowers the public, allowing them to make informed decisions and actively participate in the governance of the county”, said Mr Karanja at a sensitisation forum for Meru County Government Communication Officers.

Mr Karanja underscored the importance of transparency, accountability and public trust in fostering a free flow of information between the government and its citizens.

He added that adherence to the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya helps in building trust with the public and ensuring that information disseminated is accurate and fair.

“Professionalism is the cornerstone of effective communication. It not only enhances the credibility of communication officers but also contributes to the overall integrity of government’s communication”, stressed Mr Karanja.

He urged the officers to ensure that the Council accredits them to ensure only qualified professionals disseminate information to the public.

“Accreditation ensures that those disseminating information are qualified and adhere to professional standards”, he added.
