The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has encouraged students keen on pursuing a career in journalism to cultivate their skills by utilising digital platforms to showcase their work.
MCK Manager for Research, Planning and Strategy Leo Mutisya emphasised the importance of hard work and balancing one's talents to achieve a well-rounded life for students.
“The young learners have recognised the power of the media in informing, entertaining and educating. Their achievements have enhanced the institution's reputation and its visibility is no longer solely dependent on academic performance”, said Mr Mutisya while speaking at a mentorship session for journalism club members at Waa Girls High School.
Mr Mutisya added that mentorship seeks to enlighten club members on media ethics and journalism as a celebrated career.
MCK Manager for Accreditation and Compliance Rebecca Mutiso advised the students to start planning their career path, noting that once they decide what to pursue, they should start working towards creating a road map.
“Cultivate self-confidence because you don’t always need someone to affirm you. Determine your value proposition when pursuing your goals, take risks, don’t let fear of failure hold you back”, added Ms Mutiso.
MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Maureen Mudi expressed her admiration for the creation of the Waa Girls Media Service, affirming that it will significantly help in fostering students' expertise.
“Remember to always stay focused and build a portfolio of your work as early as you can. This will help you become more versatile as journalists”, remarked Ms Mudi.
The Council and the institution agreed on areas of partnership that will help grow the mentorship program and nurture future journalists.
