The Media Council of Kenya’s Industrial Placement Programme continues to transform lives of upcoming media workers across the country. The programme that targets final year communication and journalism students has so far benefitted 317, with the number expected to rise when the third cohort is admitted.

The Council has been assessing programme impact, with our regional coordinators visiting media houses hosting the attachees. The MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Ms Maureen Mudi recently visited Baraka FM in Mombasa where she applauded the interns for their efforts towards cutting their teeth in the media trade.

“The programme seeks to expose students to the work environment by enabling them to gain skills and first-hand experience of how the newsroom works. This is one of the best ways of growing skills and professionalism in the media industry”, said Ms Mudi.

Ms Mudi further encouraged the students to embrace creativity and take advantage of the opportunity offered.

“Always strive to pick the positives in your organisations and make the experience worthwhile as it may be a game changer in your career as you grow in the industry”.

The Production and Programming Manager at Baraka FM Mr Oscar Nyoha commended the team for their cooperation and discipline during their internship period at the station. He also spoke on the benefits that came with the programme.

“The MCK Industrial Placement Programme has not only equipped students with technical skills but also collaborative work ethic which is key for a journalist to successfully execute their duty”, said Mr Nyoha.

Ms Mudi later visited Mo Radio to sensitise them on the programme. She spoke to the staff and interns on opportunities being offered at the Council and urged them to submit applications whenever they are announced.

Interns from Baraka FM comprising students from various institutions based in Mombasa expressed their gratitude to the Council for giving them an opportunity to gain practical experience in the media industry.
