The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has urged patrons of school journalism clubs to educate students and young people on responsible media content consumption.
Speaking at the launch of journalism clubs in Kisumu County, Kisumu Regional Coordinator Evans Teddy affirmed MCK’s efforts in promoting Media Information and Digital Literacy (MIDL) among students.
He encouraged creativity in content creation through various formats and announced plans for journalism extravaganzas at different school levels, featuring competitions and mentorship programmes.
Teddy advised students that running a successful journalism club requires teamwork and proper guidance. He stressed that aspiring journalists need dedication, academic excellence, a strong command of languages—including local dialects—and effective time management.
“You must be disciplined, proficient in all languages, including local dialects, ready to work as a team, and able to manage your time effectively,” he stated.
Esther Amimo, patron of Xaverian Secondary School’s Journalism Club, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, noting that the club would provide students with opportunities to showcase their journalistic talents. She confirmed their readiness for the upcoming extravaganza.
Kisumu Boys High School Principal Austine Muma called on MCK to ensure that, while nurturing students and young people, they instil integrity within the profession and promote the creation of balanced and unbiased stories.
Schools participating in the programme include Xaverian Secondary School, Kisumu Boys, Kasagam Secondary School, Kisumu Girls and Lions High School.
Jessica Sikuku, Principal of Kasagam Secondary School, welcomed the initiative, affirming the school’s commitment to supporting students in developing their journalistic skills. “I’m very optimistic about any opportunity that promotes our students’ growth, and I am fully committed to supporting this programme,” she said.
