The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called on researchers to collaborate with the media to make scientific knowledge accessible to the public.

MCK CEO David Omwoyo has said that journalists play a crucial role in translating complex scientific information into clear and relatable narratives for effective storytelling.

"Research scientists need to collaborate with the media to enhance science reporting and ensure accurate information is shared with the public in a simple and timely manner", he said while speaking at a Science Communication Training session for Research Scientists at KEMRI headquarters in Kilifi County,

He emphasised that such training sessions foster meaningful exchanges of ideas and policy discussions, ultimately improving the quality of science reporting.

"Let us view this training as an opportunity to build bridges between scientists and the public, ensuring that research findings and innovations are communicated effectively", he added.

KEMRI’s Centre for Geographic Medicine Research Coast (CGMRC) Acting Deputy Director Sophie Uyoga advised the researchers to adapt new communication styles to enhance understanding with the public.

"We are accustomed to presenting our work in a very scientific way, focusing heavily on facts. However, it is essential to communicate science in ways that engage the public", she said.

Dr Uyoga acknowledged researchers' reluctance to engage with the media, citing sensationalism concerns.

"It's important to report facts backed by evidence to maintain credibility and trust", she added.

Head of Communication at KEMRI Wellcome Trust Cynthia Mauncho stressed the media's role in informing and raising public awareness on scientific breakthroughs.

She also called for the simplification of scientific lingua to enable journalists contextualise how to craft accurate compelling stories.

"Journalists play a vital role in equipping people with the knowledge needed for day-to-day decisions about health, the environment and evidence-based policy changes", she noted.

MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Maureen Mudi echoed the importance of demystifying scientific jargon.

"By breaking down complex terms, this partnership empowers the public with accessible knowledge, helping them to better understand the role of science in their lives and make informed decisions on societal issues", she explained.
