The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has implored Catholic media houses to collaborate to foster professional growth and sustainability.

MCK CEO Mr David Omwoyo said media houses under the Catholic church in Kenya can cooperate through existing national mechanisms in order to create more awareness of the gospel through their sharing platforms.

Mr Omwoyo who spoke today during celebrations to mark the 57th World Communications Day at the Divine Word Parish in Kayole, Nairobi affirmed the Council’s commitment to professional journalism, saying it will continue engaging the Catholic media houses in various trainings for media workers.

"The Council supports and equips local media from time to time, the Catholic-run media organisations included. We have a pool of media trainers who are ready to support local media through thematic trainings that enhance professionalism", he said.

While delivering his homily during mass, the main celebrant Father Martin Njihia called upon media practitioners and Catholic media houses to understand the context in which they are operating from.

He urged the media to continue sharing ideas and building capacity to effectively communicate the word of God in line with this year’s World Communication Day theme Speaking with the heart, the truth in love.

The Archdiocese of Nairobi boasts of 15 church-based media houses.

The World Communications Day (WCD) was established by Pope Paul VI in 1967 as an annual event, aimed to encourage reflection on the opportunities and challenges of the new media to communicate gospel message to the people. As pronounced by Holiness Pope Francis in his 2023 message to communicators.
