The Media Council of Kenya says that media is an effective means of calling attention to environment and climate change problems.
The media regulator encouraged Diploma and Advertising students to give prominence to Climate Change stories.
Media Council of Kenya Manager Accreditation and Compliance Manager, Rebecca Mutiso spoke during a career talk at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication.
She challenged the students to use the media to create public awareness of the problems created by pollution, noting that the media's main task in the environment is not only informing the public about environmental issues and covering its response to them, but also raising awareness and educating people.
"The focus should not just be on the challenges, the media should highlight stories on responses to the problems by taking a solutions approach in their coverage, media is indeed a catalyst for change," she said.
KIMC Director/Chief Executive Director Peter Wakoli said the institution is working with local communities to achieve the government target of attaining 15 billion forest cover in the next nine years.
The Media Council of Kenya is working with Kenya Forest Service, youth groups and community forest associations towards the National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign to plant at least 15 billion trees by 2032.
The event whose theme revolved on Role of Corporates in enhancing the forest cover in Kenya was organized by 3rd Year Diploma in Public Relations and Creative advertising Students.
