The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has underscored the critical need to align public relations and communication efforts to address societal challenges.
MCK CEO David Omwoyo stressed that technological advancements necessitate intensified efforts to tackle challenges within the media and communication industry.
“Technological advancements demand that we intensify our efforts to align public relations and communication strategies to effectively address the challenges facing the media industry and society at large”, said Mr Omwoyo today when he hosted the African Public Relations Association (APRA) Executive Council.
The APRA Executive Council, led by President Arik Karani, visited the Media Council of Kenya as part of their Africa Tour of Duty ahead of the highly anticipated 36th Annual African Public Relations Conference scheduled for June 9–13, 2025, in Mombasa, Kenya.
Mr Omwoyo welcomed APRA’s visit, acknowledging the association’s commitment to advancing responsible communication. “The intersection of media and public relations is more important than ever. We look forward to leveraging this partnership to promote transparency, credibility, and professionalism in digital communication”, he remarked.
The high-level APRA delegation included Vice President Prof Michelle Mekeme (Cameroon) and Secretary General Dr Omoniyi Ibietan (Nigeria), who engaged in a strategic dialogue with MCK on the evolving role of public relations in shaping Africa’s digital communication landscape.
The meeting underscored the critical need for collaboration between media and PR professionals in fostering ethical communication and countering misinformation in the digital age.
APRA President Karani lauded Kenya’s vibrant media and communication sector, emphasising the country’s pivotal role in hosting the 50th-anniversary celebration of APRA.
“Kenya is a beacon of media excellence in Africa, and this year’s conference presents an opportunity to drive conversations that will shape the next chapter of public relations on the continent”, he stated.
With the theme “Transforming Africa through Safe and Responsible Digital Communication: Celebrating 50 Years of APRA”, this milestone event will bring together over 1,000 PR professionals to shape the future of communication in Africa. As Africa’s communication landscape rapidly evolves, this year’s APRA conference is set to mark a pivotal moment in the industry’s pursuit of safe, responsible, and transformative digital communication.
