The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has underscored the role of opinion leaders in news sourcing and media accountability as crucial in enhancing professionalism.
Speaking at a townhall session in Hola, Tana River County, MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Ms Maureen Mudi noted that frequent dialogues between media and opinion leaders help to shape narratives and build constructive agendas.
Ms Mudi added that the responsibility of ensuring credible elections this year should not only be left to the IEBC but also the public which has a role to play.
“Everyone has a role to play in this elections, religions leaders, civil society and security teams should all speak in one voice,’’ she said.
Tana River Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) Mr Habeni Ndirika urged journalists to remain professional in reporting and ensure information shared to the public is verified.
" Journalists need to be patient before disseminating information to the public and ensure it is from verified and reliable sources", said Mr Ndirika.
Tana River County Assistant County Commissioner Mr Peter Makau said the good relations they have experienced with journalists has ensured they work together and build on accountability.
Speakers from the meeting agreed on the need to establish a sustained feedback mechanisms that will work towards enhancing peaceful coexistence in the society.
Members of civil society organisations, religious organisations, security teams and journalists among others attended the meeting.
