The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has recognised the role played by international media support organisations in enhancing media progress in Kenya.
MCK CEO Mr David Omwoyo applauded the international media support groups for their significant contribution in lobbying for the passing of progressive media laws in the country.
“The critical role played by Deutsche Welle (DW), BBC Media Action, Internews, and other local and international civil society groups has enabled the media to operate at high professional standards”, he said at the DW Akademie Alumni Forum 2024 held in Kisumu.
“Consequently, this has also led to the protection of media freedom and the privileges of journalists”, he added.
Mr Omwoyo at the same time called on journalists to play a proactive role in curating and packing content for public consumption.
"As we move to the future, we need to promote ethical storytelling and build credibility and trust" he noted.
He referred to the shift in technology, noting that it has opened opportunities in the media industry for journalists, content creators and media owners. He also cautioned against infringement of rights resulting from lack of proper attribution.
