The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has underscored the importance of equipping journalists with comprehensive knowledge of the Micro Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) economy to improve the accuracy and depth of their reporting.

MCK Director for Media Training and Development Victor Bwire says the Council is dedicated to enhancing journalists' storytelling and reporting skills by deepening their understanding of key thematic areas, including MSMEs.

"By equipping journalists with knowledge, specialization and networking opportunities through the MSME Economy Curriculum, we aim to bridge gaps and address existing voids in the sector," Bwire stated during the Validation of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Curriculum for Journalists webinar.

He highlighted the pivotal role journalists play in shaping the MSME narrative by spotlighting experiences, policy-level challenges, success stories, and opportunities, while also fostering accountability by illuminating critical industry dynamics.

Bwire noted that several colleges have already adopted components of the developing curriculum. He also pointed out that many media houses themselves operate as MSMEs, emphasising their dual role as both contributors to and subjects of the small enterprise ecosystem.

"When discussing media viability, these organisations must recognise their significance as small enterprises that drive employment and economic growth," he added.

Moi University Lecturer Joseph Musakali echoed this sentiment, explaining that the MSME Curriculum is designed to provide journalists and media practitioners with essential knowledge, skills, and insights into the sector.

"The curriculum will not only enhance journalists' ability to report accurately but also enable them to deliver analytical, value-driven reporting," he said.

Musakali further stressed the importance of ethical journalism in MSME coverage, urging practitioners to build industry-specific expertise and stay abreast of global trends for more comprehensive and insightful reporting.

"By strengthening journalists' understanding of MSMEs, this initiative seeks to foster informed public discourse, promote business growth, and support policy development in the sector," Musakali concluded.
