The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has affirmed its commitment to empower female journalists to enhance their capacity in the media industry.

MCK Meru Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja has said that the Council will extend help to female journalists through mentorship programmes and capacity-building initiatives.

He mentioned that doing so will aid in addressing gender-specific challenges including sexual harassment and career barriers while fostering professional growth.

“The Council is dedicated to fostering mentorship, skill development, and creating inclusive policies to enable female journalists to excel in their careers,” he said during a sensitisation forum in Meru.

Mr Karanja urged media houses to provide safe spaces for women to discuss challenges and share solutions, noting that mentorship programmes are crucial in building confidence and professional networks.

Patron of the Meru Press Club Female Journalists Dorcas Mbatia commended MCK’s ongoing support while noting the importance of mentorship in enhancing women’s competencies in the media.

“Mentorship is a transformative tool that equips female journalists with the knowledge, skills, and networks they need to thrive. With MCK’s backing, we can address systemic barriers and inspire more women to take leadership roles in journalism,” said Ms Mbatia.

The forum brought together over 20 female journalists and focused on safety, combating online harassment, and increasing women’s representation in leadership roles.
