The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called for increased investment in research to improve climate change reporting.

Speaking during World Radio Day celebrations in Meru, MCK Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja emphasised the need for well-researched journalism to ensure accuracy and depth in climate reporting. “Climate change is a complex issue that requires in-depth coverage. Misinformation can mislead the public and derail climate action,” he cautioned.

Mr Karanja reiterated MCK’s commitment to supporting journalists through training and story grants that promote climate awareness and action.

Meru County’s Assistant Director of Public Communications, Rosaline Gakii Murungi, urged journalists to go beyond surface-level reporting and engage in thorough investigations.

The event featured a roundtable discussion with environmental experts, academia, and journalists, reinforcing the need for evidence-based reporting. It concluded with a tree-planting exercise at Meru National Polytechnic, where journalists, students, and MCK representatives planted 100 fruit trees in support of environmental conservation efforts.
