The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) and the Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet) are pursuing a partnership to bolster journalists’ skills in using emerging technologies and to promote ethical technology application through training and awareness.
During a meeting with KICTANet, Stella Kaaria, MCK’s Manager of Board Services, Fundraising and Government Relations, underscored the Council’s dedication to equipping journalists with the tools to navigate the digital landscape effectively.
“This partnership offers journalists a chance to enhance their understanding of fairness, accuracy, and accountability in digital content creation. We aim to provide practical insights into our new media guidelines and best practices for content creation, dissemination, and public engagement,” Kaaria said.
Kaaria added that MCK, as a regulatory body, is proactively adapting to technological advancements to ensure ethical content dissemination. She stressed the importance of educating the media on content monetisation and thriving in the digital economy.
KICTANet CEO Grace Githaiga reinforced these views, highlighting the media’s crucial role in promoting responsible technology use.
“As technology reshapes our world, journalists must understand their operating environment. Our focus extends beyond legislation to fostering an inclusive ecosystem. Journalists should leverage emerging technologies in their reporting while holding institutions and policymakers accountable,” Githaiga said.
Githaiga also highlighted upcoming events, including the African Tech Policy Summit and the Kenya Internet Governance Forum, which will unite stakeholders to address key technology policy challenges.
