The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) today commenced the judging process for the 2025 Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA), marking a crucial step in recognising and celebrating outstanding journalistic work in Kenya.

A distinguished panel of nine judges has been tasked with evaluating the entries, ensuring the highest standards of credibility, fairness and journalistic integrity.

This year’s AJEA nomination panel comprises renowned media experts and veteran journalists, including Andrew Teyie, Sammy Muraya, Dr. Joy Mueni, Dr. Lydia Radoli, Odeo Sirari, Rachel Ombaka, Mwendwa Kiogora, Ken Bosire and Martin Mutua.

MCK CEO David Omwoyo challenged the nomination panel to critically reflect on the industry's trajectory in view of evolving dynamics.

He emphasised the importance of safeguarding press freedom and upholding the integrity of the AJEA nomination process, urging the panel to "put your heart" into selecting the best journalists.

“As judges, you are the custodians of AJEA’s credibility. Your expertise, impartiality and commitment to journalistic excellence will ensure that these awards remain a true reflection of quality reporting and impactful storytelling in Kenya”, Mr. Omwoyo said.

He reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to fostering a vibrant media landscape that upholds professionalism and credibility.

This year, AJEA received 809 entries, comprising 246 entries for the digital category, 210 for TV, 177 for Print and 176 for Radio.

The judges will come up with a shortlist from which the ultimate winners of each category will be picked.

The Health and Substance Abuse Reporting category received the highest submissions at 117 entries.
