The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has reiterated the significance of digital content monetisation as a key strategy for journalists to achieve financial stability while maintaining professional standards.
MCK Nakuru Regional Coordinator Joseph Mecha emphasised that media practitioners should focus on creating high-quality digital content and identifying effective growth opportunities to ensure media sustainability.
“The sustainability of journalism relies on ethical reporting, content monetisation and financial viability. In this era of digital transformation, journalists must embrace best practices that align with digital migration and diversify their income sources”, he said during a sensitisation forum for Laikipia-based journalists.
Mr Mecha also stressed the importance of accuracy in reporting, highlighting that fact-based journalism is crucial for combating misinformation and promoting transparency.
“Accuracy is more important than speed,” he added. “Journalists should prioritise factual reporting to enable informed decision-making, ensure accountability and maintain public trust.”
Furthermore, he encouraged journalists to bring attention to issues affecting marginalised and minority communities, as increased awareness can lead to impactful solutions.
The forum was part of MCK’s ongoing engagement with local media outlets to assess their needs and provide accreditation guidance, including the integration of the service into the e-Citizen platform.
