The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has intensified efforts to enhance collaboration with senior security officials in the Coast region, aiming to improve journalist safety and foster a secure working environment for media practitioners.
During a public baraza convened in response to recent unrest in Kwale County, MCK’s Mombasa Regional Coordinator Maureen Mudi underscored the Council’s dedication to fostering constructive dialogue between media professionals and security agencies. She emphasised the critical need to protect journalists, particularly in volatile settings, as they perform their duties.
Mudi drew attention to the risks media personnel face, citing a recent incident involving a journalist from Msenangu FM. The case highlighted the dangers journalists encounter when reporting on sensitive or unstable situations. She urged swift investigations into the incident and praised security chiefs for their commitment to improving journalist safety.
“The safety of journalists is a collective responsibility. We must ensure an environment where media professionals can work without fear while upholding the public’s right to information”, Mudi stated.
In response, Coast Regional Commissioner Ali Nuno assured the public that investigations into the broader security situation were underway, with 59 suspects arrested in connection to the recent violence.
“Our priority is to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of all residents, including journalists. We are collaborating with security agencies to address the situation and safeguard everyone”, he said.
Nuno encouraged journalists to report accurately on security issues and assured them of law enforcement’s readiness to provide support and information when needed.
Msambweni Deputy County Commissioner Josephat Mutisya echoed the call for ongoing engagement between media and security agencies.
“We recognise the challenges journalists face and are committed to ensuring their safety, alongside that of all residents”, he affirmed.
