The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is actively promoting media information and digital literacy among high school students.
As part of its ongoing programme, MCK Kisumu Regional Coordinator Evans Teddy recently conducted workshops at Chakol Girls High School, Burumba Mixed Secondary School and Sigalame Boys High School.
Mr Teddy commended the schools for fostering critical thinking and nurturing young media talent.
"Media literacy is not just about consuming information but understanding and questioning its credibility," he stated.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening journalism clubs as a foundation for media literacy and preparation for the Competency Based Curriculum.
"We must think on our feet how to be part of the CBC ecosystem and prepare the next set of future journalists and communication practitioners”, Mr Teddy added.
School officials welcomed the MCK’s media literacy initiative, recognising its value in empowering informed and discerning media consumers.
“We are grateful for this opportunity to equip our students with the tools to think critically and responsibly about media and information”, said Oscar Busera, Journalism Club Patron at Burumba Mixed Secondary School.
Emmanuel Wamalwa of Chakol Girls High School added that the programme would help students become more discerning, while Salome Mbasu of Sigalame Boys High School emphasised the importance of digital literacy in the modern world, stating, “This programme does exactly that”.
The MCK plans to continue supporting schools in establishing journalism clubs to ensure the programme’s sustainability and promote responsible media consumption.
