The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called for enhanced professional collaboration between the media and the government through regular dialogue and information sharing.

MCK CEO, Mr. David Omwoyo, noted that media regulation is evolving globally, prompting regulators like the Council to continuously review and update their strategies to uphold professionalism and accountability in the media sector.

“At the Council, we set standards, monitor compliance, and provide a platform for engagement and dialogue on media regulation and content moderation for the media, government, and the public,” he said during a meeting with Government Spokesperson, Hon. Senator Dr. Isaac Mwaura.

Mr Omwoyo revealed that the Council is currently reviewing the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya to address emerging professional and technological developments, ensuring that truth and professionalism remain central to media practice.

He highlighted the dynamic changes in the media landscape, including shifting audience preferences, evolving news gathering and dissemination methods, and the growing influence of technology. These trends, he said, underscore the need for the government to invest in understanding the modern media environment to enhance communication strategies.

The CEO emphasised the importance of regular dialogue and capacity building on emerging issues to strengthen the relationship between the government and the media sector.

Government Spokesperson Hon. Senator Dr. Isaac Mwaura acknowledged the shifting media landscape, particularly its impact on mainstream media.

“While mainstream media is shrinking, social media continues to expand, demanding a new approach,” he said.

He noted that misinformation and disinformation have significantly affected mainstream media, pushing some outlets to adopt sensational headlines in a bid to compete with social media platforms.

Dr. Mwaura advocated for the creation of professional, accurate content that simplifies and amplifies government communication, particularly around the five pillars of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

He affirmed the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with the media, recognising its vital role in governance and national development.
