The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has urged diaspora media outlets to uphold the highest standards of journalistic ethics.

During a courtesy visit to The Kenyan Diaspora Media platform in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County, MCK Nakuru Regional Coordinator Joseph Mecha emphasised adherence to the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya.

“To be clear, accuracy, balance and verification are not mere formalities; they are the bedrock of credible journalism. Rely on research, verified facts, and credible sources. Credibility fosters trust in your reporting and builds confidence among global audiences,” Mecha stated.

He cautioned against sensationalism and stressed the ethical use of images and language. “Your choice of images, language, and narratives must reflect ethical standards and proper attribution. Visuals are powerful—use them wisely and responsibly,” he advised.

Mecha urged the platform to approach sensitive topics, such as the harassment of Kenyans abroad, with compassion. “Vulnerable individuals deserve our protection. As journalists, we must safeguard their identities and uphold their dignity. Ethical reporting starts with respect for those whose stories we tell,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of inclusivity in diaspora storytelling. “Your stories should reflect the diversity of the diaspora community—youth, women, children, and persons with disabilities. Ensure their voices are heard, valued, and fairly represented,” he added.

Mecha commended the platform for its impactful content, including teaching Swahili to children raised abroad, promoting Kenyan destinations to encourage diaspora visits, and profiling successful Kenyans excelling globally.
