The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has emphasised the importance of responsible information consumption and dissemination, particularly among media students.
Speaking at a Media Information and Digital Literacy Forum for youth at Meru Institute, MCK Meru Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja called on communication and media students to uphold ethical journalism standards and embrace innovation in an ever-evolving media landscape.
“As future journalists, you carry the responsibility of ensuring that the information shared with the public is accurate, balanced and ethical. Misinformation and disinformation pose significant threats to democracy and societal stability”, he stated.
Mr Karanja also highlighted the need for continuous learning and professional development.
“Journalism is not merely a career; it is a calling that demands curiosity, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to truth. Continuously refine your skills, stay informed, and strive to improve”, Karanja added.
The session also delved into the role of media innovation, with Mr Karanja encouraging students to harness digital tools, artificial intelligence, and multimedia storytelling to stay relevant and competitive within the industry.
“The media landscape is evolving rapidly, and those who fail to adapt risk being left behind. Use digital platforms wisely to make an impact and reach broader audiences”, he advised.
