The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has urged upcoming regional online media platforms to hire skilled personnel to enhance professionalism in the industry.
MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Ms Maureen Mudi asked owners of the media platforms to conduct thorough research to understand their audience needs as they join the competitive markets.
“You are coming into a market that is already very competitive and the only way to stay ahead of the rest is by creating a niche for yourselves. Ensure that you understand your audience and hire professionals in the field to push your agenda,” noted Ms Mudi during a showcasing event for the Dream Achievers Youth Organisation (DAYO).
“Develop a compelling content strategy that resonates with your target audience. Focus on local interest stories that resonate with the people from the coastal region. Utilise social media, local partnerships, and community events to generate awareness to build a loyal audience,” she added.
Ms Mudi also asked officials from DAYO to facilitate the team to produce high-quality content that is ethical and responsible broadcasting.
“MCK believes in the potential of online radio platforms to contribute to a vibrant and diverse media landscape in Kenya. We wish you all the best in launching and operating your online radio platform in the Coast Region,” she said.
DAYO Executive Director, Seif Jira Mali noted that since its launch in 2005, the organisation gained recognition from the former Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr Ban Ki Moon on matters of peace and security in 2012.
He further mentioned that the online radio station will commence its broadcasting in 2025 with a main focus on sexual reproductive health rights among other topics.
“We shall be launching an online radio platform before the end of the year to officially commence broadcasting. Our focus will be Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), Gender Equality and issues on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) targeting women and adolescents,” said Mr Jira.
Mr Seif also spoke on the Influencers for Peace Project under DAYO noting that it was supported by Deutscher Welle (DW) Akademie. He also stated that they have partnered with the Africa Media Development on Media and Information Literacy (MIL).
