The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has advised independent content creators to leverage online platforms to monetise their content.

MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Ms Maureen Mudi says such moves are critical in ensuring sustainability in the changing media landscape.

She also encouraged the journalists to ‘jealously guard’ their branding to attract and maintain audiences on digital platforms.

“Income from legacy media outlets has diminished over time.  Branding yourself and your content on platforms like TikTok and YouTube will help you to garner a loyal audience that will in turn immensely contribute towards monetising your content,” said Ms Mudi at a capacity-building session for Glorious Times TV Staff in Kwale County.

She called on the journalists and media practitioners to take advantage of the media hubs launched by the Council, noting that they provide an environment for creativity and collaboration.

She further highlighted issues around media viability, noting its importance in ensuring sustainability in the media industry. Additionally, she asked the journalists to take advantage of emerging technologies and adopt strategies that ensure longevity.
