The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has urged journalists’ associations and press clubs to practise integrity, good governance, and strategic planning to ensure their growth and long-term sustainability.

MCK Meru Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja emphasised the critical role of visionary leadership in the effective management of journalists’ associations.

“Leadership within our press clubs must be intentional, ethical, and forward-thinking. Good governance is not a luxury; it is a necessity if our associations are to build trust, attract support, and remain relevant,” said Mr Karanja at an engagement meeting with officials from the Kisumu Journalists Network (KJN) at the MCK Regional Office in Kisumu.

Karanja implored KJN officials to demonstrate astute leadership, noting that sound governance contributes significantly to both the professional development and economic resilience of journalists within the network.

“Strategic planning is vital. Associations must not operate on guesswork. A well-defined strategy provides direction and empowers members to grow professionally while attaining economic sustainability,” he added.

During the session, he referenced the Media Council’s Press Club Portal [https://pressclub.or.ke/\], a dedicated digital platform aimed at empowering journalists by providing opportunities to monetise content, access training, and enhance collaboration.

“The Press Club Portal is one of the Council’s latest innovations designed to strengthen grassroots journalism. It offers a space for journalists to earn from their work while staying connected to a professional community,” he noted.

Kisumu Journalists Network (KJN) Chairperson Josphat Odhiambo expressed gratitude to the Council for its ongoing support to journalists and the broader regional media landscape.

“We sincerely appreciate MCK for walking alongside us. Your efforts to build the capacity of journalists and support our associations are bearing fruit. This engagement has rekindled our vision as a network,” Odhiambo stated.

He further pledged to work closely with association members to ensure they make full use of the Press Club Portal, describing it as a timely innovation that could significantly enhance opportunities for regional journalists.

“We are committed to mobilising our members to actively use the portal. It is a game-changer for journalists looking to grow professionally and boost their income,” he said.

The Council remains steadfast in supporting press clubs through capacity-building initiatives, the promotion of ethical journalism, and the creation of platforms that enhance the visibility and sustainability of regional media actors.
