Strengthening ethical and informed reporting on anti-counterfeiting and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) has been emphasised at a media sensitisation forum convened in Bungoma County by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) in collaboration with the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA).

The forum brought together journalists with the aim of deepening their understanding of intellectual property frameworks and enforcement processes while reinforcing professional standards in the coverage of anti-counterfeit operations.

Speaking during the engagement, MCK Regional Coordinator Evans Teddy underscored the strategic role of journalists in protecting consumer rights and supporting enforcement agencies.

“Empowering the media with knowledge on anti-counterfeiting and intellectual property rights ensures accurate reporting, creates public awareness, and strengthens the enforcement ecosystem. Journalists are critical allies in protecting innovation and consumer trust,” he said.

ACA Deputy Director of Research, Mr. Henry Maina, emphasised that collaboration with the media remains central to combating illicit trade.

“The fight against counterfeit goods cannot succeed without an informed and responsible media. When journalists understand intellectual property frameworks and enforcement processes, they amplify accountability, protect consumers, and safeguard legitimate businesses,” he noted.

The forum reasserted the shared commitment between MCK and ACA to strengthen media capacity, promote ethical journalism, and enhance public awareness of the economic and social impact of counterfeit goods.
