Background
World Radio Day is an international day celebrated on 13 February each year, the date is set aside by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to celebrate radio broadcast, improve international cooperation among radio broadcasters and encourage decision-makers to create and provide access to information through radio, including community radios.
Radio and climate change
This year's theme is Radio and climate change comes at a time when there are accelerated efforts advocating for reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate financing. The media has played a crucial role in highlighting the progress made and the challenges faced by journalists when reporting Climate Change. According to UNESCO, more than 70% of surveyed environmental journalists reported being assaulted, threatened, or pressured. The attacks have included 60% online harassment, 41% physical assault, 25% legal attacks, and 75% experienced mental health impact. It is against this backdrop that UNESCO proposes that this year's celebrations promote radio stations' journalistic coverage of climate change.
