About The Event
The World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) is commemorated on 3rd May every year, providing a platform for media practitioners to commemorate the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration. It is a day to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world; to defend the media from attacks on their independence; and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
As a tradition, the Media Council of Kenya jointly with stakeholders from the media sector will host the WPFD in Nairobi on 3rd May 2023 in a high-level event at the Safari Park Hotel. This year the Council will host a one-day conference in Nairobi on 3rd May 2023 to mark this Day under the theme: Shaping a Future of Rights - Freedom of expression as an enabler to promoting respect for human rights.
The event will bring together players from the government, private sector, media, media consumers, civil society, and partners to share data and information, reflect on the issues affecting press freedom, draw lessons, and develop action plans for the sector.
The event has attracted 300 participants and in the history of the Council since 2013 will see the participation of over 60 international experts drawn from Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Sweden.
Venue: The commemoration will take place as a hybrid, one-day event to be held both physically in Nairobi, Safari Park Hotel, and online.
