About The Event

The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists (IDEI) is observed annually on 2nd November to raise awareness and demand justice for journalists who face threats, attacks, and even death while performing their duty. The day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2013, in response to the increasing number of journalists being targeted and the widespread failure to hold perpetrators accountable.

Globally, IDEI serves as a platform for governments, media stakeholders, and civil society to reflect on the state of press freedom, advocate for stronger legal protections, and push for investigations into crimes committed against journalists.

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) actively participates in marking IDEI by engaging media professionals, policymakers, and human rights organizations in discussions on safeguarding journalists’ rights and ensuring a free and secure media environment.

Objectives of IDEI

  1. Raise awareness on the risks and challenges faced by journalists in crises and emergencies, including threats, harassment, and violence.
  2. Advocate for ending impunity for crimes against journalists, ensuring justice for victims.
  3. Enhance legal and institutional frameworks to safeguard journalists, especially in conflict and emergency situations.
