The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called on county governments to exercise proactive disclosure by sharing information with the public.
MCK Meru Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja says that it is important for devolved units to be transparent while conducting business to enhance governance.
He encouraged counties to leverage the media as a key partner in disseminating information to the public arguing that, transparency is crucial for sustainable development and public participation in governance.
"The development of counties is directly linked to the willingness of county governments to provide the public with timely and accurate information. When citizens are well-informed, they engage in meaningful decision-making and hold their leaders accountable," he said during a meeting with Senior Government Officials from Samburu County.
Katiba Institute's Programs Manager, Patricia Joseph, urged public officers to adopt a proactive approach to sharing information by utilising the county websites, social media, and public notice boards.
“Regular updates on development projects, financial reports and key government decisions should be made accessible through county websites, social media platforms, and public notice boards,” she said.
Katiba Institute Head of Communications and Public Liaison Kevin Mabonga, highlighted the importance of adhering to Article 35 of the Constitution, which guarantees the public's right to information.
He emphasised that transparency is key to building trust between the government and its citizens, and it empowers the public to contribute meaningfully to governance.
"Adherence to Article 35 is not only a legal requirement but also a moral obligation for public servants. Transparency is key to building trust between the government and its citizens and it also empowers the public to contribute meaningfully to governance,” he noted.
Samburu County Secretary Wilson Lesuuda reaffirmed the County's commitment to transparency and timely dissemination of information. He mentioned that the county has always maintained an open communication culture with the public and the media.
“Samburu County has always maintained a transparent culture of relaying information to the members of the public and the media as we believe in empowering the masses through regular dispensation of information,” said Mr. Lesuuda.
