The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is calling for quick resolution of media-related disputes to enhance professionalism.

MCK CEO David Omwoyo says quasi-judicial bodies have been constituted to fasttrack administration of justice.

“As provided for by the Media Council Act, 2023, the Media Complaints Commission exists to interpret the law and can adjudicate on media-related disputes, remedy situations, impose legal penalties, and ultimately ensure professional media conduct in Kenya”, said Mr Omwoyo when he hosted newly-appointed members of the Complaints Commission at the MCK offices in Nairobi.

He urged the Commission to adapt to the transformed media landscape and technology in its operations, saying the dynamics have greatly impacted media integrity.

Mr Omwoyo at the same time urged the Commissioners to uphold professionalism when handling media disputes, saying they “are the face of the society in ensuring responsible journalism”.

Complaints Commission chair Demas Kiprono reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to media accountability and public interest and expressed a desire to work closely with the Council in addressing professional challenges in the media industry.

Other areas discussed at the meeting included ways of improving media complaints handling processes and promoting public awareness of the Commission’s role.

The delegation comprised Mr Kiprono and members Mwanik Kantim, Maseme Machuka and Nasra Omar.
