The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called on county assemblies to work closely with journalists to ensure smooth flow of information to the public.
MCK Meru Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja emphasised the significance of unrestricted information access for journalists reporting on County Assembly proceedings.
“Access to information is the cornerstone of a thriving democracy. Granting journalists access to county assembly proceedings will enable them to empower the citizens by keeping them informed of decisions that impact their daily lives”, he said in a meeting with the County Assembly of Meru Department of Information and Legal Services.
Mr Karanja further said that the provision of crucial information from county assemblies equips journalists to unveil narratives that spotlight vital aspects in governance, budgeting, and service delivery.
Director of Legal, Legislative Procedural & Committee Services Benson Kinyua noted the need for capacity building for journalists attached to the county assemblies.
“An informed media plays a crucial role in promoting transparency and accountability. By implementing efficient communication practices and equipping journalists with necessary resources, we can ensure comprehensive coverage of our proceedings”, he said.
Deputy Director of Public Communication at the Meru County Assembly Mercy Nthuku mentioned that measures are in place to ensure that only accredited journalists are allowed into the assembly chambers.
“To maintain the integrity and professionalism of coverage within the county assembly, we will ensure that only accredited journalists are granted access to the assembly chambers”, she said.
During the meeting, potential areas of collaboration aimed at enhancing the flow of information and strengthening media capacity in the region were explored.
