Journalists have been urged to report accurately and exercise discretion when reporting on mental health issues.

Counselling Psychologist Dr Janet Surum emphasised the need to caution audiences when reporting graphic content. Additionally, she called for the prioritisation of stories that give hope to the community.

“It's crucial to share narratives that inspire hope and highlight the possibility of recovery. Such stories can be a source of inspiration for many. Exercise caution and empathy for those who may still be struggling.” she said at an MCK Training for Journalists on Mental Health and Financial Literacy in Kericho County.

Dr Surum warned the journalists against sensationalising suicide and behaviors related to mental health. She further mentioned the need to maintain a responsible and respectful approach when reporting on mental health.

“When reporting on suicide, it is essential to provide information that can prevent tragic outcomes. Avoid giving explicit instructions or descriptions which inadvertently may contribute to the spread of suicidal thoughts among vulnerable populations”, she noted.

She stressed the importance of protecting victims' privacy, to shield them from victimisation by society.

During a session on financial literacy, MCK Kisumu Regional Coordinator Evans Teddy told the journalists to focus on smart investments to attain financial health and stability.

“Journalists must prioritise financial literacy to embark on a transformative journey of discovery, learning, and empowerment to make informed financial decisions”, he stated.
